New York Hall of Science, Queens, NY
1996

Roto-Sphere, a site-specific kinetic sculpture installed in the rotunda at the New York Hall of Science. Suspended above the visitors' heads, a large steel ring with two smaller inner aluminum "Roto-Rings" on a vertical cable, slowly rotates. As the outer steel ring rotates, "Roto-Rings" travel down the cable, spinning one on top of the other, gaining momentum until joining together to create the illusion of a solid sphere.

Materials:
Outer ring: steel pipe 2 3/8" OD; 22' diameter. "Roto-rings": aluminum 1/4" x 4", 3' diameter Holographic foil brush strokes; variable-speed three phase motor controlled by Vector drive
